Troubleshooting for sluggish or jammed power trowels (e.g., blade deformation, bearing damage).

If the power trowel does not rotate flexibly or gets stuck, it is a serious mechanical failure. It must be stopped immediately for inspection; otherwise, it will further damage the engine or transmission mechanism.
To accurately determine the cause, please follow the core principle of "separate first, then judge" and conduct the investigation through the following steps:
Step 1: Core diagnostic operation – Separate the engine from the working head
This step is key to determining the scope of the problem.
Remove the spark plugs: First, remove the spark plugs to prevent the engine from starting unexpectedly during operation and ensure safety.
Try turning the engine: Pull the starting rope quickly by hand. At this point, two situations will arise:
Situation A: The engine shaft rotates flexibly. This indicates that the internal components of the engine (such as the piston, crankshaft, and connecting rod) are basically normal, and the fault point is most likely in the transmission mechanism or the working head.
Situation B: The engine shaft is completely stuck and won't turn. This indicates that the malfunction occurred inside the engine and the problem is rather serious.
Step 2: Conduct targeted screening based on the results of Step 1
Situation A: The engine rotates smoothly. The fault lies in the transmission mechanism or the working head
Now it is necessary to further determine whether the problem lies with the clutch, gearbox or blade assembly.
Inspect the blade (smear) assembly
Phenomena and Judgments
Blade deformation/scratches: Observe with the naked eye whether all blades are flat and whether there is any bending or deformation caused by hitting the ground or foreign objects. When the deformed blades rotate, they will scrape against the machine's base plate or the ground, generating huge resistance.
Bearing damage: This is a very common cause. Rotate the blade disk directly with force by hand and feel:
Can it rotate smoothly? Is there any lag or "clicking" sound?
Hold the blade disc with your hand and shake it up and down or left and right. Is there any obvious gap or loose feeling?
If any of the above feelings occur, it indicates that the bearing supporting the blade disc has been worn or damaged and needs to be replaced.
Check the transmission gearbox (for gear-driven power trowel)
Phenomena and Judgments
Open the oil filling hole or observation hole of the gearbox to check whether the gear oil is sufficient and whether it has deteriorated (such as turning black or containing metal shavings).
If the gear oil dries up or is insufficient, the gears will wear out rapidly or even get stuck under dry friction.
If you hear abnormal noises inside or find it very difficult to turn, it might be that the gears are damaged.
Check the clutch (for centrifugal clutch type polishing machines)
Phenomena and Judgments
The clutch block may fail to open or retract normally due to spring failure, uneven wear or poor lubrication, resulting in friction and jamming with the clutch cup.
If the engine rotates normally at low speeds but gets stuck or makes abnormal noises as soon as it accelerates, the possibility of clutch failure is relatively high.
Situation B: The engine itself is stuck. The fault lies inside the engine
This is a more serious situation. Possible causes include:
Lack of lubrication in the engine can lead to "cylinder seizure" or "bearing seizure".
Judgment: Check whether the engine oil level is severely insufficient or there is no engine oil at all.
The reason is that when the engine operates with no or little oil, the high-speed friction between the piston and the cylinder, as well as between the crankshaft and the bearing bush, generates high temperatures, causing the metal to melt and stick together, eventually getting stuck. It is usually accompanied by a pungent burnt smell.
Damage to internal components
Problems with the connecting rod and crankshaft: Bending of the connecting rod and damage to the crankshaft bearing can lead to internal motion interference and jamming.
Valve problem: Extremely rare, but if the valve breaks and falls into the cylinder, it will press against the piston and prevent rotation.
Engine overheating
The heat sink was severely clogged with cement and oil stains, causing the engine to overheat. The piston, due to excessive thermal expansion, lost the gap with the cylinder wall, resulting in "thermal seizing". Sometimes, after the engine cools down, it may resume rotation.
Summarize and check the list
The following order will be the most efficient for troubleshooting:
Check immediately
Engine oil level: This is the primary and essential item to check.
Blade condition: Observe with the naked eye for any obvious deformation or scratch marks.
Perform the separation operation
Remove the spark plugs, pull the start rope, and determine whether the problem lies with the engine or the working head.
Targeted inspection
If the engine is normal: Focus on checking the blade disk bearings (shaking and rotation tests) and the gearbox oil.
If the engine is stuck and the engine oil is insufficient, it is very likely that the engine is "seizing the cylinder" or "seizing the bearing", and a major overhaul is needed. If the engine oil is normal, it could also be due to internal mechanical damage.
Safety Tip: Do not forcibly start or use the machine until the problem is thoroughly investigated and resolved, as this may cause catastrophic secondary damage. For internal engine malfunctions and bearing replacements and other repairs, if you have no experience, it is recommended that you send them to a professional repair shop for handling.
